Aims and objectives

Aim:

My final idea for the project is 15 minute version of Rome and Juliet using original dialogue but accompanied with modern sounds, targeted at younger people. I am currently not considering any changes in the dialogue. I am thinking about the story structure.

Objectives:

  1. Create the story structure, reduce the dialogue to keep the story alive and authentic. Write a script
  2. Think about non-dialogue audio
    1. creating list of SFX, music and ambiance to fit the mood of the story
  3. Create the pro tools session and organize the tracks in relation to the script
  4. Record the dialogue and narration
  5. Edit, import SFX, music and mix

Learning outcomes:

1. I chose to work on the project independently. I knew it was going to be a challenge, but as one of the things I would to get better at is time management, and I knew working unsupervised will help. Also, after the graduation I intend to work as a freelancer in audio production field, so that is going to be valuable experience.

2. Another reason why I decided to challenge myself with this project was to improve my organisation around mixing. Mixing sound effects, dialogue, music from scratch is going to be huge help me in the future.

3. Directing actors and working on my own voice acting

4. Improve storytelling

Brainstorming ideas

My main starting point was Romeo + Juliet (1996), with help of dynamic editing, present-day cinematic techniques and props like guns and cars to visually bring it to the modern age. Inspired by the film, I wanted to update the story using audio instead of visual.

Some of the ideas I’ve had to tell the story:

  • Romeo and Juliet ideas:
    • audio book
    • Experimental soundscape sonic experience based on Rome and Juliet without dialogue
    • modern re-telling in a comedic fashion.
    • Black hawk down/Romeo and Juliet – re-telling set in modern conflict. Star crossed lovers story set in the middle of war between the West and the East
    • Juliet’s spoken diary entries, vblog

I considered some other ideas and one that I wrote down one that I particularly liked (came up with it with Dylan during one of the tutorials)

  • Other ideas:
    • Polish popular child stories in English. In form of an application, with links to facts and biographies of characters and authors of the stories
